Buffering and pollinator habitat
We have buffered our alfalfa field with a pollinator habitat mix of six grasses and twenty-four forbes/legumes. This buffer provides significant natural habitat for pollinators, beneficial insects and wildlife, while benefiting the production of the hay field. We recently had the NRD plant 990 trees, bushes and shrubs into the buffer. Another side benefit are the pheasant and quail populations!
Our alfalfa is grown on the acres we began transitioning toward USDA Organic Certification in 2017, but so far we aren’t planning to certify because my marketing is doing well without the extra hassle. Our seed is non-GMO, certified organic. Our fields are registered on FieldWatch/Driftwatch.
